Deidre Schoo

BIOGRAPHY

Deidre Schoo is a freelance photographer and documentary filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. A regular contributor to the New York Times, she has covered a diverse range of topics from upstart cultural phenomena to rehab centers and shoe shops! As a documentary filmmaker, she is directing and shooting a project on street dance in East New York and similar communities.
In 2010, she traveled on assignment to Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria, Africa to photograph AIDS treatment centers. Throughout her career, she has gained unique access to fringe cultures across the US, including Texan cotillion societies and rural families on the US-Mexico Border.
Deidre’s specialty is documentary portraiture. Her ability to quickly gain the trust of her subjects affords her the unique and personal access that is her trademark.
Deidre studied at the International Center of Photography in New York. Her work has been recognized by various organizations and publications, including Photo District News, National Geographic and ASMP.
